Today I’m blogging about World Arthritis Day. We are all supposed to wear blue as a symbol to increase arthritis awareness. But when I went to the American College of Rheumatology website, I was startled to see that they were only focusing on Osteoarthritis today. For Arthritis Awareness Month in May (why are these separated?) there is only passing mention of RA and other autoimmune arthritis diseases.
RA Warrior made the point that it is time to change the name of RA to “rheumatoid disease” or to “autoimmune arthritis.”
So, what shall we wear on World Arthritis Day? I made an inclusive choice: Blue skort and a purple shirt. So I am wearing blue – for “arthritis” and blue and purple for “rheumatoid arthritis!” And when people ask, I tell them about both. It will help, albeit in a very small way, to spread awareness not only of arthritis but of rheumatoid disease/autoimmune arthritis.
So happy World Arthritis Day!
