The Prez spoke in Cairo Egypt today. Both the Ol’ Curmudgeon and I were disgusted. His entire speech is HERE. Following are just a FEW of the points we are concerned about.
“More recently, tension has been fed by colonialism that denied rights and opportunities to many Muslims, and a Cold War in which Muslim-majority countries were too often treated as proxies without regard to their own aspirations. Moreover, the sweeping change brought by modernity and globalization led many Muslims to view the West as hostile to the traditions of Islam.”
If Obama was referring to any US colonialism, he was off the mark. The US hasn’t tried to occupy and own any of the countries in the Middle East. We did invade the Philippines back in the late 1800’s, but gave them back their sovereignty in the mid to late 20th century. During WWII, we occupied Japan, but only a few years later gave them back their sovereignty. The only land we have kept is Guam. If the residents there want their independence, I suspect we would give it to them. The US does not have and has not had the kinds of colonial aspirations exemplified by Great Britain in the 19th cent, or the old Soviet Union in the mid-20th cent.
“As the Holy Koran tells us, “Be conscious of God and speak always the truth.” That is what I will try to do – to speak the truth as best I can, humbled by the task before us, and firm in my belief that the interests we share as human beings are far more powerful than the forces that drive us apart.”
Obama quoted from the “Holy Koran” three times. But only once did he mention the Bible – and not once did he mention the Torah. He did mention the Talmud – which is not scripture, it is commentary. He did not try to show, even in passing, the similarities – or the differences – among Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.
Obama also did not seem to understand that most of the math and science attributed to the Arabs and Moslems were STOLEN from the Byzantine Greeks – Christians – who lived in the eastern part of the Roman Empire and were overrun by the Moslems in the 13th century. In fact, most people don’t seem to realize that.
“I know, too, that Islam has always been a part of America’s story. The first nation to recognize my country was Morocco. In signing the Treaty of Tripoli in 1796, our second President John Adams wrote, ‘The United States has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion or tranquility of Muslims.'”
So, does Obama not realize the Treaty of Tripoli was drawn to end the war we fought against the Barbary Pirates who were based in and supported by, Morocco? Check the Wikipedia article HERE (fairly well-researched and factual for a Wiki article), for an eye-opener. And did you ever wonder where the phrase “to the shores of Tripoli” in the Marine Hymn comes from? It comes from the fights against the Barbary Pirates – who traded in CHRISTIAN slaves – along the Northern coast of Africa. So, Obama wants to use that as an example of how the US and Moslems have been friendly from the beginning of our country’s history?? If you really want to know what Thomas Jefferson and the other Founding Fathers thought about Islam, you might want to check out THIS well-researched article by Christopher Hitchens in Slate Magazine in 2007: Jefferson’s Quran: What the founder really thought about Islam.
“Much has been made of the fact that an African-American with the name Barack Hussein Obama could be elected President. But my personal story is not so unique. The dream of opportunity for all people has not come true for everyone in America, but its promise exists for all who come to our shores – that includes nearly seven million American Muslims in our country today who enjoy incomes and education that are higher than average.”
Seven – Million – American – Muslims??? Hardly. His inflated statistics will come back to haunt him. There are somewhat less than 3 1/2 million Muslims in the USA.
Michelle Malkin pointed out in her blog about the Cairo speech: “Despite all his supposedly frank talk, Obama insists on hiding behind the euphemism “violent extremism.” It’s not only the “t-word” — terrorism — that failed to pass from his lips. It’s the j-word — jihad, violent jihad — that Obama will not acknowledge. He clings to the myth that only a “tiny minority” of “extremists” subscribe to the deadly Koran-inspired mission to force infidels to submit. He refuses to acknowledge and confront the violent jihadi virus around the world and on American soil.”
Chris Good said, “Some conservatives like President Obama’s speech in Cairo–some didn’t.”
The president’s Cairo speech was disappointing to us, but not a surprise. He mangled history and statistics. He essentially “dumped” Israel and represented the USA as a Muslim nation (or at least an emerging Muslim nation), he made light of our reaction to 9/11, and in essence apologized to the world for our use of intensive interrogation methods – at a time when we didn’t know if another attack would occur immediately or not. Whizbang points out that “A US leader should not embrace the language of appeasement while we are at war for many reasons, not least of which is that it sends the wrong message to our enemies.”
Gateway Pundit had this to say:
“Barack Obama also crushed the spirit of Middle Eastern democracy advocates:
‘I know there has been controversy about the promotion of democracy in recent years, and much of this controversy is connected to the war in Iraq. So let me be clear: no system of government can or should be imposed upon one nation by any other.’
This was a significant statement.
If the US president will not stand for democracy, who will?”
And, perhaps, this is where I should stop: If the US president will not stand for democracy, who will?
